Letter to Baroness May 30 January 2026

Monday 2 February, 2026

Members may be interested to know that a nine year investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016  Referendum has thrown up the rather startling information that Russian interference and money may have been known by the Tory government early in 2017 to have rendered the Referendum vote not free and fair. This raises the most serious questions about UK democracy,  so as a result the Movement has a letter which we now plan to send to Baroness May. We will keep Members informed as this investigation progresses.

Dear Baroness May,

We are writing to you in your capacity as a Member of the House of Lords to request clarification on a matter relating to the United Kingdom's Article 50 Notification of 29 March 2017.

As you will be aware, prior to and following the 2016 UK EU Referendum there were publicly reported concerns , including those later reflected in official and parliamentary material, regarding foreign interference and the role of overseas money in the referendum campaign. These concerns raised questions in public discourse about whether the Referendum process met the standard of being free and fair.

Against that background, we would be grateful if you could clarify whether such concerns were considered relevant when the Article 50 notification was drafted and sent , and whether they were regarded as having any bearing on the representations made in that letter regarding the Referendum and the United Kingdom's decision to withdraw from the European Union .

We are not seeking disclosure of confidential advice or classified material, but rather clarification at the level of principle as to whether these issues were taken into account at that time.

Thany you for taking the time to consider this request.

Yours sincerely

The Directors
